Pastoral Care

Coláiste Feirste recognises the importance that pastoral care plays in influencing the ethos of our school.  We attempt to create an atmosphere in which the pupils feel safe: - where they feel valuable and worthwhile as individuals and where they are encouraged to grow in both learning and social skills in a safe, healthy environment.

Pastoral Care
The Pastoral Care System

On their entry to Coláiste Feirste, each pupil is allocated a place in a form class with a particular form teacher assigned to look after their social, physical and intellectual wellbeing.

These Form Teachers are supported by a Head of Year who has the ultimate responsibility for the welfare of every child in his/her Year Group

Form Teachers meet with their pupils in class assembly at the beginning and at the end of the school day.  There is also a Year Group assembly every week.

The Pastoral Care System
Attendance

Coláiste Feirste expects all students to be punctual and to have a regular pattern of attendance.  This is very important for success in their education.  The Form Teacher or Year Head, depending on the case, contacts the parents of students whose attendance is a cause for concern.

Attendance
Child Protection

Coláiste Feirste adopts a particular caring style in relation to personal matters concerning our pupils and exercises caution and attention regarding their wellbeing and safety.

The designated teacher for Child Protection is Emer Mhic an Fhailí agus, and in her absence, Siobhán Mhic Giolla Éain.  Any case will be treated and dealt with in strict confidence and child protection issues will be dealt with within the appropriate legislative framework

All members of staff are made aware of how to recognise the signs indicating any form of child abuse and should he/she have any concerns regarding a student, the designated teacher will be informed immediately.

Teachers are not obliged to seek any information from parents / guardians or from any other family member.

Bullying

Coláiste Feirste has revised its approach to tackling bullying in conjunction with experts in the field.  The revised Anti-Bullying Policy aims to prevent and tackle all forms of bullying.  It gives a clear definition of what constitutes bullying behaviour and the most appropriate and effective strategies to tackle it.  Coláiste Feirste takes every accusation of bullying very seriously. Allegations of bullying will be dealt with by the Pastoral Team according to the school’s Anti-Bullying Policy, a copy of which is available on the school website.

A range of policies are available on the school website www.colaistefeirste.org

Behaviour for Learning

Coláiste Feirste ensures good discipline through our policy Behaviour for Learning. This is a positive behaviour strategy based on good relations, the avoidance of conflict and the promotion of good behaviour rather than a negative focus on rules and sanctions.  It covers all aspects of the school that contribute to a positive learning environment and school ethos.  All members of the school are expected to help maintain an environment conducive to learning of which the fundamental tenets are mutual respect, courtesy and tolerance.

Aims of Positive Behaviour Policy:

  • To promote Gaelic culture and language

  • To support effective learning and teaching

  • To contribute to mutual respect

  • To maintain an orderly environment both within the school and the surrounding community

  • To gain the agreement and active support of teachers, support staff and parents/carers

  • To work in partnership with parents/carers to encourage positive behaviour and attitudes

  • To promote Pupil Voice in regard to Behaviour for Learning expectations and rewards

  • To reward good behaviour and achievement
